Peoria Police Cadet Applications




LOCATION:  600 SW Adams Street, Peoria, IL  61602

HOURS:                  Varies – 20 hour work week

SALARY:                $12.00 per hour

SUMMARY:  Uniformed civilian employee who serve in a paid internship-style program designed to familiarize and prepare them for a career as a Peoria Police Recruit. Duties include training, administrative and clerical functions, presence at public functions, and traffic direction. The assignments are widely varied so that the Police Cadets can experience a broad range of operational and administrative functions. Police Cadets are required to meet established criteria by completing a prescribed course of college curriculum and a physical fitness program prior to being considered for appointment to Police Recruit.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Must reside within a 20 mile radius of the Peoria Police Department; High School graduate or have attained a general education development (You must supply a copy of your high school transcript); be 17 years of age at the time of appointment, but not over the age of 20 years old (You must supply a copy of your birth certificate); possess a valid Illinois driver’s license, with a “Class D’ qualification; be enrolled a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester at an accredited college or university upon appointment; be able to pass a background investigation; and be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.

BENEFITS:  A bank of 5 (8-hour) sick days and one (8-hour) personal day.

IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES:  A Police Cadet is not expected to have prior experience, but is expected to have an interest in a career in modern policing.  Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population, in person, via telephone, and in writing.  Be courteous and customer-service oriented.  Ability to accurately record information – by hand and using a computer – file records and process paperwork.  Ability to take direction from supervisors.  Maintain a positive attitude, have good moral character, be honest, responsible and trustworthy.  Motivated and able to complete the required law enforcement related educational, training and physical fitness programs.

MENTAL/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, to include overtime, emergency call back, shift work, nights, holidays and weekends to accommodate City needs.  May work in extreme cold and outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, electrical hazards, vibrations, inadequate lighting, intense noises and travel.  Requires feeling, finger dexterity, grasping, hearing, repetitive motions, seeing, talking, bending, kneeling, lifting, reaching, standing, stooping, walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, pulling and pushing.  Lifting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.   Must complete 24 college credits prior to completion of the Police Cadet program and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. *Please notify the Human Resources Department if accommodations are required to participate in the selection process.
